Joan Goodwin, a physics teacher turned NASA astronaut candidate in the early 1980s, trains alongside fellow astronauts Vanessa Ford, Griff, Lydia Danes, and Hank Redmond in Houston while raising her young niece Frances, and falls in love with Vanessa; a present-day frame set on December 29, 1984 follows a shuttle mission in crisis after Griff and others are endangered during a spacewalk and reentry.
