Stella Benson, a lonely young woman escaping a failed London life, takes a job caring for a disabled teenage boy on a Sussex farm owned by the overbearing Maddens. Her letters, observations and awkward encounters with the household and village slowly unsettle the pastoral promise of country life. The novel is a comic, darkening riff on Jane Eyre and the English rural idyll.
