Cherries

by Osamu Dazai · 1948

A writer who jokes constantly at home to hide his misery sits through a noisy summer supper with his three small children and a wife who murmurs that between her breasts lies a valley of tears. After a cold quarrel he flees to a bar, where a dish of cherries arrives and he spits out the stones, repeating that parents matter more than children.
