Tsuda, a salaried Tokyo clerk, is hospitalised for surgery while his wife Onobu, his sister Ohide and his mother-figure patrons circle around money, vanity and an old lover he has never told his wife about. Every conversation is a duel of appearances, and the novel stops unfinished mid-confrontation.
