Almayer's Folly

by Joseph Conrad · 1895

A failed Dutch trader rots away on the Borneo river of Sambir, chasing a dead man's rumor of gold while his half-Malay daughter Nina falls for the Balinese prince Dain Maroola. When Dutch gunboats close in on Dain and Nina chooses to flee with him, Almayer is left alone in his unfinished house, drowning his ruin in opium and denial.
