Aging architect Halvard Solness, who has spent his career keeping younger rivals down and is haunted by the fire that built his fortune, is confronted by a strange young woman who demands he make good on a promise from her childhood: to climb as high as he builds. He climbs the tower on his newest house and falls to his death.
