Cornelius Suttree, who has abandoned a life of privilege, lives alone on a houseboat on the Tennessee River in Knoxville around 1950, fishing for a living and moving through a demimonde of prostitutes, junkmen, drunks, and petty criminals like Gene Harrogate, in a sequence of episodes marked by arrests, illness, and sudden violent death.
Books mentioned in Suttree (2)
The Book of Mormon by Joseph Smith: “he bought a candy bar and he sat alone on a bench in the empty waiting room ... reading from a black leatherette copy of the Book of Mormon he found in a pamphlet rack.”
Tom Swift and His Motorcycle by Victor Appleton: “He read Tom Swift and His Motorcycle and he read The Black Brotherhood and he read Mildred at Home.”
