The Color Purple

by Alice Walker · 1982

The Color Purple is an epistolary novel told through the letters of Celie, a poor Black woman in the rural American South in the early twentieth century, and later through the letters of her sister Nettie, writing from a missionary posting in West Africa. Across decades, Celie's voice moves from silenced endurance under an abusive father and husband toward self-possession, shaped by her bond with the blues singer Shug Avery and by the women around her. The novel traces how Celie comes to find her own voice, her own understanding of God, and her independence.
