Villon's Wife

by Osamu Dazai · 1947

The wife of Otani, a drunken, dissolute poet, goes to work at a small Nakano restaurant after her husband steals money from its owners. Told in her own voice, she finds a lightness in the squalor and tells him it doesn't matter if they are monsters, so long as they stay alive.
