Tajima, an editor and black-market operator in postwar Tokyo with nearly ten mistresses and a wife in the countryside, decides to go straight and break with them all. Advised by a coarse older novelist, he sets out to stage his farewells, leaning on a strikingly dressed woman named Kinuko; the story breaks off unfinished.
