On the Takase boat that carries convicts down the river from Kyoto toward exile, the constable Shōbei escorts Kisuke, a condemned man who seems oddly cheerful about leaving. Kisuke tells his story of killing his brother, and Shōbei is left doubting whether it was murder at all as the boat slips on through the dark.
