Sanshō the Bailiff

by Mori Ōgai · 1915

A mother and her two children, fourteen-year-old Anju and twelve-year-old Zushiō, trudge toward their father in the far west, but boatmen lure them aboard and sell them apart: the mother to Sado, the children to the rich bailiff Sanshō at Yura. Worked hard in his household, the siblings plot an escape, and in the end Zushiō's cry restores sight to his blind mother on Sado.
