In an unnamed town, a white man named Anders wakes to find his skin has turned dark brown, and as the same transformation spreads to others, the community descends into fear and militant violence before gradually, over years, accepting a world where everyone has changed color. The novel follows Anders and his partner Oona, and later their daughter, through this upheaval and its long aftermath.
