Narrated in first person by Theseus, the novel follows him from his boyhood in Troizen, where he is raised believing himself fathered by a god, through his journey to Athens and his selection as one of the youths sent as tribute to Crete, where he trains as a bull-dancer in the Bull Court of Knossos Palace under the rule of the Cretan priest-queens.
