In a mythic, pre-colonial Africa, a mercenary known as Tracker, who can smell anyone's trail, is hired to find a missing boy and joins a band of misfits that includes a shape-shifting Leopard. Narrated to an inquisitor from a prison cell, the first book of the Dark Star trilogy turns the hunt into a tangled and violent account of kingdoms, witches and monsters.
