On a winter beach at Kamakura, a narrator reading in the dunes meets a haggard stranger who digs up a hidden bottle of brandy. The man tells him his life: raised as another man's son, he marries Satoko and learns that his adoptive mother is his true mother and his wife is his half-sister, proof to him that fate cannot be escaped.
