Klara, a solar-powered Artificial Friend built to keep a lonely child company, watches from a store window and hopes to be chosen. Once purchased for a sickly girl named Josie, she observes the human world with a mixture of naive devotion and startling perceptiveness, coming to believe the Sun itself might be able to save Josie's life. Ishiguro tells the story entirely through Klara's limited, earnest point of view, using her outsider's gaze to probe what love, loyalty, and selfhood really mean.
