Seventy-seven-year-old Utsugi, ailing and half-paralysed, records in his diary his obsessive lust for his son's glamorous wife Satsuko, who toys with him and extracts silk scarves and jewels in return for small intimacies. He plans to have her sole carved on his gravestone like a Buddha's footprint stone, so that he can feel her tread on him after death.
