In backwoods Appalachia, Culla Holme fathers a child with his sister Rinthy and abandons it in the woods, telling her it died; when she discovers the truth and sets off searching for the baby and the tinker who took it, Culla wanders separately through a landscape of hangings, a turpentine camp, and a marauding trio of drifters who eventually murder the child before Culla's eyes.
