Cowboys John Grady Cole and Billy Parham, now working a New Mexico ranch near the Texas border in the early 1950s, cross into Juárez where John Grady falls for a young epileptic prostitute named Magdalena, setting the pair against a violent pimp. The novel closes the Border Trilogy begun in All the Pretty Horses and The Crossing.
