After his grandfather's death and the loss of the family ranch, teenage John Grady Cole leaves West Texas on horseback with his friend Rawlins, crossing into Mexico where a runaway boy named Blevins draws them into trouble with the rurales and John Grady falls for the daughter of a wealthy hacienda owner.
