Hereward, exiled for his wild youth, fights as a mercenary across Flanders and Ireland before storming home when the Normans conquer England. He rallies Saxon outlaws in the Fens around Ely for a doomed guerrilla war against William the Conqueror, and ends his life broken and half-forgotten, a last relic of the England that vanished with Harold at Hastings.
